Surreal Animation

Work Category: Animation

For this project, the goal was to create a surreal image and bring it to life through animation using Adobe After Effects. I wanted the concept to connect to my Christian roots, so I chose to reinterpret a biblical story in my own visual style.

I focused on the story of the burning bush from Exodus chapter three. While the original story does not take place in outer space, I added a surreal, cosmic setting to give it a more imaginative and personal feel.

I created the original composition in Adobe Photoshop, then imported it into Adobe After Effects for animation. I intentionally kept the animation simple so it would support the story rather than distract from it. At the time, I was still developing my motion design skills, particularly in creating organic movement like fire. Instead of aiming for realism, I used the tools I had to create a subtle rippling effect that suggests motion while maintaining the overall tone of the piece.

Overall, this project represents an important step in my development as a designer and animator. It challenged me to translate a meaningful narrative into a visual and animated form while working within my current skill set. Although there are areas I would refine with more advanced techniques today, this piece reflects my ability to adapt creatively, make intentional design choices, and bring a personal perspective into my work. It marks both where I started and the direction I continue to grow toward.
